Learning through play

Children learning through play at Happy Hearts Montessori nursery

A typical day at Happy Hearts

The curriculum at Happy Hearts Montessori Nursery and Pre-school focuses on elements of the philosophy and practices of Montessori teaching, and combines this pioneering child-centred education with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Our morning sessions typically include literacy, numeracy and science, alongside daily circle time (which are both teacher/child-led).

“Children primarily learn through play and teachers act as facilitators of their learning, moving each child forward at their own pace.”

We also include weekly indoor/outdoor activities such as music and dance classes, as well as tennis and French club, all of which are taught by specialist teachers. Our children are also taken on weekly Forest School sessions, where they have a unique opportunity to learn through nature.

In the afternoon, the children have the opportunity to enjoy arts & crafts, including cooking, alongside sports activities, such as yoga, football and fitness, as well as drama, gardening and trips to the park and library.

Our Montessori Nursery has a high child-staff ratio, which means that each child is given as much individual attention as they need to thrive, feel happy and reach their full potential. We practice purposeful planning and have consistent systems of measures, through which we report your child’s progress.

Music is an essential element in cognitive development

At Happy Hearts we provide an environment enriched with singing and music. By making music and singing songs, children find alternative means of self-expression, as well as outlet for their feelings and emotions.

Humans are wired to be sensitive to sound patterns, and this sensitivity allows music to foster communication and imagination in young children, helping them to speak more clearly, develop a larger vocabulary, and strengthen their social and emotional skills.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum

Outdoor play

Weather permitting, we take the children to Holland Park daily. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the space, use outdoor equipment and continue our discovery about the natural world. Trained Forest School teachers help the children learn from the natural surroundings while guiding their developing knowledge of how we respect the environment.

Extra-curricular activities

As part of our Montessori nursery curriculum we encourage the children to explore their passions and pursue a wide range of interests. They participate in extracurricular activities which help them learn a multitude of skills that open up their minds and broadens their horizons. The children are invited to take part in a variety of classes, such as, tennis, French, Yoga, Forest school and Music.

Trips and events

We give the children the opportunity to participate in a wide programme of carefully planned special events and trips. Recent trips have included Dean City Farm, The Chelsea Physic Garden, The Wetland Centre, Battersea Zoo, The Science Museum, Buckingham Palace and The National History Museum. Trips ‘out in the world’ are always meticulously organised so that every child feels safe and secure and ready to enjoy the exciting event.

In fostering children’s understanding of the world around them, we also invite skilled professionals as community guests for an in-house field trip. Previous guests have included an animal entertainer, The Little House of Science, representatives from the fire brigade, local police officers, and dentists, to name but a few. All these visits and experiences enhance your child’s learning and expands their horizon.

“Extracurricular activities help children learn a multitude of skills that are instrumental for their later success in life.”

Annual events at our Montessori nursery include Sports Day, the Christmas concert, a visit from Father Christmas, an Easter Bonnet Parade, a Halloween party and a summer concert at the end of the year, where we say goodbye to the graduating classes and celebrate their time with us. We also take part in various fundraising and charity events throughout the year.
